In a huge step forward for Trump’s actions against sanctuary cities, the city counsel of the crime ridden city of Lansing, Michigan has added its name to the growing list of American cities that have reversed their sanctuary city policies in light of the new administration.
According to the President Trump made it clear, with an executive order, that any states, cities, or counties refusing to comply with federal immigration laws would find that any funding from the federal government would soon be drying up.
At a White House press briefing, Attorney General Jeff Sessions echoed the president’s position and urged sanctuary cities to reverse their policies. He said,
“The President has rightly said, disregard for law must end. In his executive order, he stated that it is the policy of the executive branch to ensure that states and cities comply with all federal laws, including all immigration laws.
Today, I’m urging states and local jurisdictions to comply with these federal laws, including 8 U.S.C. Section 1373. Moreover, the Department of Justice will require that jurisdictions seeking or applying for Department of Justice grants to certify compliance with 1373 as a condition of receiving those awards.”
The administration has already begun publishing the names of jurisdictions with sanctuary city policies.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Lansing has taken the administration at its word and has decided to comply with the law.
During a city council meeting, elected officials voted 5-2 to no longer have the city declared a sanctuary for refugees and illegal immigrants. Just prior to the vote, 74 people spoke with 49 of those arguing in favor of having the city remain a sanctuary city.
After the vote was tallied, and the reversal was official, several spectators reportedly shouted insults at the city council, including, “spineless,” and threats to unseat the elected officials.
